Our Iceland volcano hike was a once in a lifetime experience. We were so thrilled to be able to go to Iceland to see an active volcano! Day 1 - Iceland Van Life (Volcano Hike) 00:00 Intro 00:58 Iceland Flight We used Iceland Air to fly from Boston to Iceland. On our first day in Iceland, we arrived at Keflavik Airport early in the morning. 02:55 KuKu Camper Van We had to wait for a shuttle to get to KuKu Campers to pick up our camper van for our trip. We were so excited to get the camper van because it would be our first van life experience. we got the camper van, we headed right away to the volcano. https://www.kukucampers.is/ 03:41 Volcano Hike I think doing the volcano hike was what we were both looking forward to the most during our trip to Iceland. The location of the active volcano is on the Reykjanes peninsula in Southwest Iceland. The eruption started in the Geldingadalir valley of Mount Fagradalsfjall which is about 30 km from the capital of Reykjavik. The volcano has been erupting since March 19, 2021. There was plenty of parking available at the base of the hiking trail. There was even a small shop selling food and a portable toilet. There are different paths to the eruption site. Before arriving in Iceland, we did research and decided to take path C. At the time, path A was closed and path B was the backside of the crater. Path C is about 4.5km and it takes you through the lava field and the front of the crater. Safetravel.is is a website in Iceland that you can use to check the hiking conditions. Weather and hiking conditions change fast in Iceland, so it's a good idea to check that website before heading out. The weather was fantastic during our hike. The hike itself was a little challenging because the ground was slippery, so we had to be very careful. We started our hike by making our way to the lava field. We didn't see any flowing lava on this particular hike (we did see flowing lava on our last day in Iceland), but we were able to get up close to the hardened lava. After hiking for quite awhile, we decided to turn around and hike back because the volcano wasn't erupting at the moment. We could see steam coming from the crater, but we didn't see lava. We were disappointed that we didn't see the volcano erupting, but we had an extra day at the end of our road trip to try the hike again. This time it was erupting and it was spectacular! Stay tuned for that vlog on Day 8 of our Iceland road trip. 09:55 Iceland Hot Dogs We were starving after our long hike, so we went to Reykjavik for lunch. We got hot dogs from the famous hot dog stand called Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur. The hot dogs were so delicious that we went back for seconds. http://bbp.is/ 10:36 Hallgrímskirkja After lunch, we passed by Hallgrímskirkja. It's the largest church in Iceland and one of Reykjavik's best known landmarks. https://www.hallgrimskirkja.is/ 11:11 Driving to campsite We were completely exhausted from traveling and hiking, so we headed to the campground for an early night. We stayed at Reykjavik Campsite which is about 2 km outside of the city center. https://www.reykjavikcampsite.is/ 11:25 Day 2 Sneak Peak (Iceland's Golden Circle) 11:35 Outtakes #Iceland #IcelandVolcano Travel Vlog #66 | Iceland | Filmed September 2021 Epidemic Sound: Between The Lines (COE Remix) (Instrumental Version) by Elijah N.
