The company has pulled the brakes on its 1st & most iconic brand Maruti 800 but it will always be a car loved & respected by the country. In 1983, former PM Indira Gandhi handed over the keys of the first-ever Maruti 800 to it's lucky owner. It was the first automobile of the company that has had a long & successful run on the Indian roads, passing virtually unchallenged for the first few years. The Maruti 800 was the brainchild of the late Sanjay Gandhi, who had been given the license to make a wholly indigenous car. However, the company languished & was unable to takeoff until after his death in 1980. A year later PM Gandhi gave a go ahead to the foreign collaboration for India's affordable passenger vehicle. Suzuki officials travelling to India heard of the project & jumped in.
